Our Favorite Oil Dip

In my house, nothing beats a hot and fresh loaf of bread waiting to be dipped in pan juices, slathered in butter or treated to a special oil based dip. When we want an oil dip for our bread, we have relied on this tasty oil and spice mixture Jimmy created years ago. We have made changes to it over time and it is not always made the exact same way each time. Sometimes we may be feeling fancy so we will add fresh minced garlic or a bit of dried rosemary to the mix. Feel free to give this recipe some tweaking based on what ingredients you have on hand or what your people like. The best recipes are the ones we take over and make ours.

My Basic French Bread goes wonderfully with this dip but if you are short on time, pick up a good quality French loaf from the grocery store’s bakery section.

Our Favorite Oil Dip

Prep time: 5 min. | Total Time: 5 min. | Serves: 6

Ingredients

  • 1 cup good quality extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper (about 5 grinds from a pepper grinder)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon balsamic vinegar

Directions

Put olive oil in a shallow dipping bowl and add balsamic vinegar. Add all other seasonings and gently stir to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning to your liking then dip bread and enjoy!

We enjoy this dip year round as it goes great with a light salad and bread as well as the hearty soup and casserole fare we tend to favor in the colder months.
