The Toast and I (a Friday Fail)

The Toast and I (a Friday Fail)

Today is Friday! I'm glad you all made it through the week! Time for me to share with you another funny fail in the Little Prairie Kitchen!

Now I would love to tell you that my fail is something like meringue or from scratch pie crust. Something that is difficult and takes time, attention and skill to master. But it is not. The food that to this day I fail at (after oh so many tries) is French Toast.

Yes, French Toast.

That recipe with bread, egg, cinnamon and milk cooked and slathered in butter and syrup. Every time I have EVER tried to make it, my bread ends up runny and gross and sticking to the pan. I’ve adjusted temperature, I’ve added oils (butter, Pam) to try and prevent sticking, I’ve sat there staring at it and tending it and still….a mess. I took a good long break from it and now have decided that it is time to try again. And again. And again. Until I get it, run out of eggs and bread or am sick of French toast.

What’s the moral of this little story? Cooking is one of those things that does not has a 100% success rate no matter how seasoned you are (or think you are!). There are simply too many factors involved in cooking to allow a home run every time. Cooking is something that you can rock for weeks then suddenly almost ruin a pan on Sunday over egg soaked bread. But that is what makes it fun! The creating, the making something from a small amount of simple ingredients that is so much more than the parts it started out as. Don’t deny yourself that because you had some burned toast or blackened meat.

So if there is a recipe that you have burned, blacked, over seasoned, under baked or just messed up do something for me. Don’t give up! Back away from the recipe, cook some recipes you know and love and then take a deep breath and come back! Come back to your french toast and try. Keep trying until you get it and once you do, do a happy dance and enjoy!

Now if you will excuse me, I have some bread to ruin:)

So tell me, what is your “French Toast”? Is it super complicated or very simple like this? Message or comment on social media and let’s chat!

And if anyone has some French Toast tricks, please help a girl out!
